Old Glossop - Yellowslacks - Higher Shelf Stones - Pennine Way - Bleaklow Head - Pennine Way - Doctors Gate (Roman Road) - Old Glossop

It was a lovely sunny start to the walk. The ascent was quick on to the ridge of Yellow Slacks. This then turned into Dowstone Clough and at this point the clouds started to gather. At the top of the clough it became a maze and I had to find my way by compass to the summit of Higher Shelf Stones through the wilderness of peat haggs and groughs. Great views from here but quite muddy underfoot. As I descended from the summit I came across the wreakage of the B29 Superfortress (see details below). Then it was more compass work and boggy peak groughs to find the Pennine Way. Once I found the path it was reasonably easy to negotiate myself to the summit of Bleaklow Head. Very overcast here and no views. Decended Pennine Way the way I came and then continued on to the Doctors Gate Roman Road. Followed this path back to Old Glossop and my car. The Doctors Gate path was quite steep in parts and twisty and rocky - not what you would expect from a Roman Road! A really good walk but could have been better if the weather had not deteriorated on the tops.

The wreakage of the US Air Force B29 Superfortress in Higher Shelf Stones is the scene of a tragic 1948 aircrash which was involved in the Berlin Air Lift. All 13 members of the aircrew were killed and a simple memorial erected on the 40th anniversary now marks the spot.
