WALK
NOTES
|
Malham
- Malham Cove - Limestone Pavement - Gordale Scar
- Janets Foss - Malham
Decided
on this afternoon walk after a business trip
to Harrogate.
The weather improved dramatically as we made our
way along the limestone pavement. The
most exciting moments were walking along the limestone
pavement above Malham Cove, Janet Foss waterfall
and of course Gordale Scar. It is certainly an
awe inspiring experience. The gorge owes its origin
to erosion by Ice Age meltwater. Today a small
stream flows down Gordale except in dry weather
when no water flows. The present stream loses some
of its flow into the limestone in the gorge above
the waterfalls. This water takes underground routes
through caves and fissures to re-emerge out of
the beck bed between the scar and the road. |
