It was a lovely sunny second day for the famous "Royal" Shrovetide Football game in Ashbourne. Tuesday's game was started by Robert Shields of Parwich, a managing director of Longcliffe Quarry and chairman of Vital Earth Limited. The ball was scored at around 8:45 in the evening for the Up'ards by Richard 'Tate' Slater. Wednesday's game was started by Bob Hudson who is a well-known character of the town and is President of Ashbourne Ex-Servicemen's Club, secretary of Ashbourne Crown Green Bowls Club and Trustee of the Empire Club. He also can often be heard via the PA system at the annual Ashbourne Highland Gathering. Mr Hudson was formerly a regular player of the game and he will keep his shrovetide ball as it was not goaled on the day.
IN MEMORIAM: There was tragedy at the end of the Tuesday game - David Johnson (51) from Little Eaton was found collapsed shortly after the game ended and later died. David was a Down'ard.
